Talk about questionable taste.

I’m blogging today on Tor.com about a movie trailer, and never have I been more at a loss for an opinion.

I found the trailer looking for Inkheart stuff (what? It’s Helen Mirren and a unicorn, of course I’m gonna see it!). I started watching this trailer and thought, “This is cool!” Nice opening images, GREAT opening image of the villain, nice low-budget Parkour effects on the bad guy, awesome shot of the creepy fucker with the teeth and the glass panel, small band of ragtag heroes out to save the adorable Macguffin – I was in! I was in.

But then again, we have only one line of real dialogue, and I swear it’s the same girl who was in my acting class in high school, sophomore year, who picked random words to enunciate because she thought it was really dramatic.

But then again, some of the camera work is nice, but then again some of it looks like it was filmed on my cel phone in someone’s basement, and it’s got a solid premise, but it’s not really original, but on the other hand what is, and at least we have two chicks in the trailer who don’t seem to be the Love Interest, and the guy with the tape looks kind of awesome, and the music is good, but – seriously, is there something really wrong with this guy that Hollywood hasn’t picked up a perfectly servicable tiny-budget dark-sci-fi movie?

This is the hamster wheel of my mind since last night (sorry, , really), because I recognize that my Questionable Taste sensors are going off, and there are several legit reasons why this movie shouldn’t get a wider release, but seriously, how could it be worse than, say, any M. Night Shyamalan movie?

I’m not even saying the guy is good; I’m saying, surely he’s good enough for Hollywood, if people less talented have made it. Right? Does he smell bad? What’s going on?

ETA: Also, this is his second full-length film that hasn’t been picked up by a studio. I appreciate the dogged creativity that keeps him going etc etc, but is this the equivalent of self-publishing? I just – seriously, you guys, hamster wheel.
